irregularities associated with voters’ registration in the state if the Commission fails to address them properly.
This was disclosed yesterday in Kano by the Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje while briefing newsmen in his
office.
Ganduje wondered why the exercise was not properly handled by those entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring its total success,
adding that INEC should have expedited action on accomplishing the giant task.
He said the issue of voters’ registration was something that should be taken seriously by the government and that “in an ideal democratic
setting, no one is expected to be disenfranchised.”
The Deputy Governor stated that in an event that the INEC fails to live up to its billings on extending the exercise by seven days, the
state government would be left with no alternative than to take legal action against the Commission.
“By this statement, I am not one of those alleging any act of sabotage on the part of the commission. What I am trying to say is that, it is
an indication of the fact that INEC doesn’t have the capacity to perform the national assignment creditably.”
Ganduje said the extension would be an opportunity for everyone to be registered, adding that the state government had successfully
mobilised the electorate in the state to comprehend the fact that they have a role to play in making democracy work in the country.
He however complained about the inadequacy of the number of centres earmarked for the exercise in the state.
Stressing on the importance the state attaches to the exercise, the Deputy Governor said, “the state government has constituted a committee
under my chairmanship to ensure all seriousness is given to the exercise.”
