Lagos Lawmakers Urge Strict Enforcement on Use of Pedestrian Bridges

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday appealed to relevant security agencies in the state to enforce the use of pedestrian bridges to minimize deaths on highways.

Rotimi Olowo, (APC-Somolu II), who raised the issue at the plenary under matter of public importance, had decried the prevalence of avoidable deaths arising from pedestrians’ disregard for the bridges.

Olowo, the Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, LAHA, said that in spite of the huge amount committed by the State government to provide the bridges, some residents still ignore the bridges.

He advised the ministry of information to embark on public enlightenment campaign to re-orientate the populace on the safety benefits of using the bridges.

Olowo also suggested that sanctions, such as community service, should be imposed on offenders, apart from fines.
Also contributing to the debate, Segun Olulade, (APC-Epe I) said that there was the need to sensitise pedestrians on the importance of using the bridges.

Olulade, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Information and Publicity, urged the enforcement agencies to live up to their responsibilities.

The lawmaker also cautioned the law enforcement agents not see the task as an opportunity to extort money from people.

Similarly, Dr Ajibayo Adeyeye, the Majority Leader of the house, recommended the erection of a wire mesh under the Ojota bridge to check crossing of the highway.

Adeyeye said that such measures could also be replicated at all pedestrian bridges to further deter people from crossing the express road.
In his contribution, Rotimi Abiru, the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, urged residents of Lagos to cultivate the right attitude.

"The change that we all clamour for starts with each of us. Democracy is about everybody; the government and the people. We must play our part in the progress of the state and the country at large,” he said.
